For those not wanting to splurge out on a new CV....Here our top CV writing tips!
Make sure you include the following in your CV:
- 'Personal details' - name, address, telephone numbers and email. This is ALL you need.
- 'Personal Summary' - talk about your career plan and highlight key qualities and skills for the job that you are going for. Write your profile in the third person. For example, Sarah has exemplary use of customer service and excels in teamwork. This shows that you are a bit more professional than the rest.
- 'Qualifications & Education' - always start with the most recent and list in reverse chronological order. Always include what you are currently studying.
- 'Employment & Work Experience' - list all jobs in reverse order with dates and a brief description of duties and responsibilities.
- 'Interest/Achievements/Responsibilities' - avoid a long list. Try and be creative in your writing. For example, 'David has an avid interest in helping charities and has completed the last two London marathon's. David donated this money to cancer research.'
- 'Referees' - list two. Ideally one from University and one from an employer. Always ask before putting their name down. Provide name, title, address and email if this is possible.
Always remember...
- Tailor your CV for the job you are going for. If you don't have a job description then research the company.
- Be positive about the skills you have, make your CV enthusiastic!
- To check the grammar, spelling and punctuation! Get someone to double check if you can.
- Use headings and sections.
- Be consistent in how you organise your information
- Make sure it is word processed and printed on decent paper!
