How to Survive in The Age of the Individual

We are now entering the 'Age of the Individual', in work and play. You are going to have to know how to market yourself in the workplace in your social space.

There are so many choices that we all make, the personalities we have, the products we choose that make us individual. The brands that you choose to wear are an extension of your own brand. They say snowflakesomething about you, whether you like it or not.

These brands don't necessarily have to have negative connotations, but they always take on some manifestation of who you are. When many of our credentials can be searched on sites like Google, Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin - building your own personal brand is becoming ever more important.

When you think of the kind of person you represent in your career, ask yourselves these things...

1. What makes me the person that I am?
2. What am I passionate about?
3. Where do I want to be in 5 years, 10 years?
4. What do the clothes I wear, say about me?
5. Who do I want to work for?

You are the powerful one in this situation. You are in control of your future. You are the CEO of your own company and that company is you. Whether you own want to own your own business, become a freelancer, work for a small or big business, it is you that makes the shots, nobody else.

You are not owned by any company, whether you work for them or not. You are your own brand, so start believing that from today.

The 'Career Portfolio' is growing stronger. Degrees don't mean so much.

In this designing of your own career, many people are finding that it's possible to jump from industry to industry - from career to career. By marketing yourself and expanding your network and powerful reach, so many more opportunities open up to you. Things just aren't the same as they were for our parents generation. There were more choices back then, if you had a degree it meant something - now it doesn't mean so much.

In our generation we'll find that people might jump career every 3 or 4 years. Perhaps starting a business, then going into digital marketing then going to work for some new technology start up. Technology is moving forward at a startling place that the way we work is going to be ever evolving. More and more managers have thrown out the idea of the standard 9 to 5 and bringing a more individual way of working for people. Some work from home, some start later. It really is the age of the individual.

He who is not courageous enough to take risks, will accomplish nothing in life. Muhammed Ali.
