{AF template=round_quotes} The urge to gamble is so universal and its practice to pleasurable, that I assume it must be evil. Heywood Broun. {/AF}
What is a financial vice?
On Wikipedia they describe it as “a practice or a habit considered immoral, depraved, and/or degrading in the associated society.” For the purposes of this article, financial vices aren’t so intense.
Our definition of financial vice is something that you shouldn’t be spending your money on but you do anyway. This could be something as bad as gambling or just buying too many pairs of shows. These vices have a detrimental effect on our bank balance and can limit us if they carry on.
The good thing is that these vices can be changed. Your brain has the ability to work out that this is the wrong to do and you can change, you just have to put your mind to it.
The financial vice that cost me personally
When I was living as a student I had a bit of a problem with online gambling. Even though I was still a student I managed to get a credit card and started putting money on football and tennis.
At first, I was winning some half decent money and then just betting it all away again – so I was just about breaking even. It was fun, the adrenaline it gave me to put a bet on was just too much of a thrill. I couldn’t stop.
It got to the point where I had no money in the bank yet I was putting £2000 bets on to win a few hundred pounds and eventually the bookies won, as they always do with stupid gamblers like me.
Since then, I changed. I realised that there must be a lot of things missing in my life if I have to chase bets to make money and get an adrenaline rush.
Since leaving university I have started a ‘vice’ which is more productive for myself. My advice is to choose a a vice that really will help you in the long run. I have now taken up triathlon and am very much into self development. I want to be the best that I can be, I don’t want to be average.
Whilst you’re a student you can’t afford to have a vice and remember when you do have money in the bank after you graduate, spend it on a vice that will aid your future.
Do you have a financial vice?
